COMMISSIONING

Commisioning a portrait from me is a simple business. If you've got a portrait in mind, just follow these steps ....

Step 1
Select your photograph.
This can be any favourite photograph, or you can take one specially. However, in order to achieve a satisfactory end result, there are some guidelines to avoid wasted time and effort. First off, the photograph should be of sufficient size to draw from. For a face-only portrait, the face in the photo should be at least the size of a ten pence piece. Daylighting is always best, with a good range of light and shade on the face.

Flash photography usually leaves the face looking flat, and makes it more difficult to discern a person's character and nuances of expression. However, some flash photos are better than others, so if in doubt, send me a copy and i'll let you know if it'll work. Photos sent via email should be in the form of jpegs and should be at least 800x600 pixels in size, though bigger is better.
Step 2
Send your photograph to me along with a note on any special requirements, what medium you would like me to use, the size you would like the final portrait, and any other information you feel might be helpful. You can either post it to me or email it if you have the facility to scan it at a reasonable size. Photos taken with digital cameras are fine to use. If using snail mail for photos please use registered post if the photograph is unique or important - and don't forget to include a self-addressed envelope with postage paid so i can return it to you.
Step 3
I'll let you know as soon as possible (usually the next day) whether the photograph you submitted will make good material for a portrait. Then the work begins....

Step 4
At some point, usually within the following two weeks*, i'll email you a photograph of the finished drawing for your approval. If you like the result, you post a cheque for the agreed amount and I post the drawing. If you don't like it for whatever reason, just say so and there's no commitment.
Simple!

*If you require faster service, give me a ring. I can sometimes finish a portrait in a couple of days if there is a need for speed.
